In a powerful display of commitment to diversity, education, and sustainability, a team from Infineum in the United States recently dedicated their time and energy to volunteer with the Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI) at the HBCU Week in Wilmington, Delaware.
FOSSI is a groundbreaking partnership between the American Chemistry Council (ACC), American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), Chemours, and the HBCU Week Foundation, aimed at addressing the underrepresentation of minority students in the chemical and related industries.
Infineum proudly supports this initiative, which grants $40,000 in scholarships to students pursuing preferred STEM degrees at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
Infineum’s Head of Communications, Helen Clear, who volunteered at the event, shared her thoughts, saying, “I was glad to take part in this initiative as I learned just how much scholarships like this can change lives. It’s very humbling to be involved and to meet so many amazing people. Some work days stay with you a long time – this was one!”
FOSSI’s mission is to increase the number of underrepresented professionals in the chemical industry workforce, and it’s making great strides. Beyond scholarships, it offers students a chance to take part in the Fundamentals of Success Program, which equips them with practical skills like problem-solving, time management, communication, and leadership development. Moreover, each scholar is paired with a corporate sponsor, fostering a dedicated support system throughout their four years of college. Scholars also gain access to internships and future career opportunities with all 70+ FOSSI sponsor companies, a valuable pathway to success in the STEM industry.
Infineum’s HR Manager, Lisa Catarella said: “We are excited to partner with FOSSI and are planning for our first student sponsorship for next fall. Infineum hopes to help students with a passion for STEM pursue their dreams and turn what may seem impossible, possible.
“Infineum USA colleagues will have the opportunity to mentor our scholars and help them gain experience and knowledge throughout their studies. While we will participate in this program at the national level, we also plan to engage with NJ schools in the communities near Infineum’s Linden/Bayway sites to promote the FOSSI program and what it has to offer. This is a fantastic opportunity to build a stronger bridge to local STEM talent while also strengthening our relationships with HBCUs. Infineum is proud to begin this journey.”
By volunteering at the FOSSI event during HBCU Week, Infineum demonstrates its commitment to sustainability inspiring young minds to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
