Future Fuels Power Decarbonisation Efforts

Hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2 ICE) for heavy-duty trucking are being developed to help decarbonise this important industry and we’re developing and evaluating solutions in this area.

Hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2 ICE) are well suited to aid the decarbonisation of heavy-duty trucking. Compared to alternative zero-carbon powertrains, they offer good efficiency at full load and can be brought to market by repurposing the existing R&D capabilities and manufacturing supply chains found today in the automotive industry.

H2 ICE equipped vehicles will need to overcome some barriers to entry including; infrastructure to support refuelling, hydrogen cost and availability, and suitable safety precautions. At the engine lubrication level, we expect that the right additive chemistry can extend engine durability and reliability. Achieved through managing efficiency-reducing and potentially engine-damaging pre-ignition of the hydrogen fuel, as well as managing water-induced lubricant thickening and engine corrosion.

We are working closely with early adopters and volume players to ensure that we have the right technology at the right time to support our customers decarbonisation and sustainability aspirations.

Beyond hydrogen, methanol, ammonia, and biofuel offer alternative approaches to achieve a lower carbon future. We recognise that getting to a low carbon future requires multiple energy carrier options, and the preferred solution will vary by region and application, but we are preparing to offer solutions for all fuel requirements.
