Earth Overshoot Day: Proud to Protect Our Marine Ecosystems

Volunteering - 1 August 2024

Earth Overshoot Day (EOD) marks the date when humanity has consumed its annual allowance of natural resources. This day serves as a crucial reminder that we can reverse current consumption trends to improve our quality of life and collectively contribute to #MoveTheDate.

Global Volunteering Efforts: Mumbai, Rio and Singapore

At Infineum, over 70 volunteers dedicated their time to beach clean-ups as part of our Global Volunteering Week initiative. Through the power of collective action, they prevented plastic waste from polluting our oceans — and raised funds to protect vulnerable pets. Their efforts made a difference not just to the planet, but also their local communities. The volunteers felt a real sense of purpose and camaraderie and valued the opportunity to connect with colleagues they don’t work with day to day.

GOING FOR GARBAGE GOLD

In Mumbai and Singapore, the teams removed over 285 kg of waste between them! In Rio, colleagues collected 30 bags full of garbage. What’s more, they separated out more than 200 plastic bottle caps that local NGO Rio Eco Pets could sell to raise money for their work.

LOCAL EFFORTS AND COMMUNITY IMPACT

In Mumbai, over three-quarters of the Infineum team took part in an event organised by the Afroz Shah Foundation that attracted over 2,000 volunteers. Dushyant Gupta, Operational Marketing Manager, comments: “It was heartening to see everyone working together. Throughout the activity, we shared stories and bonded over the shared mission. It also strengthened our commitment to reduce our plastic usage. We’re now inspired to add more activities like this to our corporate calendar.”

Carol Silva, Market Intelligence Advisor, reports from Rio: “Our Rio Plant is so close to the local community — it’s important to us to have a good relationship with our neighbours. We were pleased that local people came up and told us how happy there were to see us promoting this kind of activity. It brings to life our community awareness. And of course, fits perfectly with our CARES value of Respect. The team here felt really good about volunteering in this way and now want to do something every quarter.”

Colleagues from our Singapore Plant and Business and Technology Centre doubled the amount of trash collected last year. Charles Tew, Maintenance Scheduler, observes: “The beach cleaning was a powerful reminder of our duty to protect and cherish our natural environment. We’re proud to have taken action to preserve coastal ecosystems and protect marine life. Together, we can make a significant impact that will benefit future generations.”
